Privacy policy
Last updated {{DATE}}. This policy covers Quantified Map for iPhone and iPad, version {{4.3.0}}, and this website.
Summary
- Your maps and timeline are generated on your device, and the data behind them is stored there. There is no Quantified Map account or server holding your history.
- Quantified Map does not track you and does not sell or share your data for advertising.
- Two kinds of data leave the app, both not linked to you and used only for app functionality: precise location (to name places and load maps) and crash data (to fix problems).
- Place names come from Apple Maps by default. Foursquare is used only if you turn it on, or when you tap “Search Foursquare”.
- Strava and Swarm are contacted only if you connect them.
Personal maps and timelines
Data you record or import into Quantified Map (places, journeys, activity types, notes, workouts, check-ins, photo locations, GPX files and Moves backups) is stored in a database in the app's private storage on your device. It is included in your iOS device backups like other app data. The developer cannot see it.
Activity and location
With tracking turned on, the app records your location in the background and builds your timeline locally. To name a place you stopped at, the app sends its coordinates to Apple Maps (MapKit) to find nearby points of interest or an address; Apple's privacy policy applies.
Foursquare is off by default. If you turn on Settings → Use Foursquare for place names, coordinates of places you stop at are sent to Foursquare to look up venue names. With the option off, Foursquare is contacted only when you tap “Search Foursquare” while choosing a place yourself. Foursquare's privacy policy applies.
Maps are drawn with the Mapbox SDK, which downloads map tiles for the areas you view and collects anonymous usage telemetry. You can opt out of Mapbox telemetry from the ⓘ button on any map. Your recorded history is not uploaded to Mapbox. Mapbox's privacy policy applies.
Connected sources and permissions
- Apple Health: with your permission, workouts and their routes are read on your device to show them on your maps and timeline. Health data is never uploaded by Quantified Map and is never used for advertising.
- Photos: with your permission, the date and location of your photos are read on your device to place them on the map. If you use the geotagging tool, a location is written into the photos you choose.
- Strava (optional): you sign in on Strava's site and the app downloads your activities and routes to your device. Nothing is uploaded to Strava. Disconnecting in Settings revokes the app's access and removes the sign-in token.
- Swarm by Foursquare (optional): you sign in with Foursquare and the app downloads your check-ins to your device. Nothing is posted. You can disconnect in Settings.
Sign-in tokens are kept in the iOS Keychain on your device. iOS controls the location, Photos and Health permissions; you can change them at any time in the iOS Settings app. Connected services apply their own privacy terms, and like any internet request they receive your device's IP address.
Diagnostics
Release versions send crash reports and a short list of error types to Sentry, so problems can be found and fixed. A report contains a technical error category, the names of the last app operations (for example “GPX import failed”) and standard technical details such as device model, iOS version and app version. It does not contain your locations, place names, notes, imported data, screenshots or contact details, and it is not linked to you. Sentry's privacy policy applies.
Personal Backup and exports
Personal Backup creates a copy of your history encrypted with a password you choose, saved where you decide. GPX exports and map images are created on your device and go only where you send them.
Removing data
There is no “delete all data” option in the app yet. Deleting Quantified Map from your device deletes all the data it stored there. iOS device backups may keep a copy until they are replaced or deleted. To stop access to connected services, turn off tracking and disconnect Strava and Swarm in Settings; revoking an iOS permission stops future access but does not delete data already imported. Backups and exports you saved elsewhere remain until you delete them. Data held by Apple, Foursquare, Mapbox, Sentry or Strava is covered by their policies.
Children
Quantified Map is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their data.
This website
quantifiedmap.com sets no cookies and shows no ads. It is hosted by Vercel, which processes standard request logs (such as IP address and browser type) to deliver and protect the site.
The site uses Vercel Web Analytics to count visits in aggregate: which pages are viewed, the referring site, the country or region, and the browser, operating system and device type. It uses no cookies and does not identify you or follow you across other sites; a visit is recognised only by a hash of the request that is discarded after 24 hours. Vercel Speed Insights measures how quickly pages load, in the same anonymous, aggregate way. Neither is used for advertising. Vercel's analytics privacy notes apply.
